I am proud to call myself a librarian. I hope the rest of you are, too. 這是Ruth A. Kneale 在「You don’t look like a librarian」結論的一句話，我覺得很感動，也讓我想研究一下她提到的Stereotypes of librarians (圖書館員的刻板印象) 這一有趣的主題。

＊ 根據一項調查，人們認為典型的圖書館員具有以下5種性格。(註2)
1. Quiet 安靜的
2. Mean or stern 無情的或苛刻的
3. Single/Unmarried 單身的
4. Stuffy (觀點，舉止等) 陳腐的或呆板的
5. In Glasses. 戴眼睛
◎Ruth A. Kneale 在「You don’t look like a librarian！」 一篇文章中提出她的觀點，
＊在街上詢問民眾，一聽到圖書館員時，腦海中會有什麼想法？他們說，會想到是一個老女人 (an old woman)、綁髮髻 (with her hair in a tight bun)、戴眼鏡 (wearing glasses)、穿一件毛線衣 (a cardigan)、和很醜的鞋子 (and sensible (meaning ugly) shoes)，還有總是喜歡說「噓 Shh」。
＊即使現在是網路時代，我們圖書館員每天都在打電腦，也還是資訊組織專家，但是一般大眾對圖書館員的形象，似乎還停留在中世紀的刻板印象 (mid-century’s stereotype)。
＊文章中有2個我覺得特別的關於圖書館員的平面廣告的例子：
1. 第1個廣告的文字是： What the Internet needs is an old-fashioned librarian.....網際網路時代需要一位什麼樣的過時的圖書館員。 這位圖書館員會讓你發現在網路上跟在圖書館裡一樣容易發現一本書。 因為她的工作方式，是創造一個標準跟標記，節省你在網路上蒐尋的時間，得到更多的資訊，包括蒐尋27億個網頁-虛擬的Dewey分類法。
作者覺得這個廣告對館員有正面的形象意義，只是文字用了Old-fashioned librarian，還有照片中她的穿著，好像跟館員的刻板印象不謀而合，不是很好。
2. 第2個，它的文字是「Librarian by day ，Bacardi by night。」
白天是館員，晚上喝Bacardi。
她要我們試著想像看到這樣的廣告時，Just imagine what will happen if you pour a little Bacardi down that librarian throat！She’ll drop her hair and be ready to party hardy！”這樣子對館員形象的改變有比較好嗎？
3. 電影、圖書、電視或是其它媒體，他們的情節和人物的安排，對圖書館員不一定都是正面的形象，也有負面的廣告，但至少增加了圖書館員的曝光率，圖書館員的專業形象是要靠自己慢慢的型塑並深值在讀者的心中。
＊In conclusion (結論)
1. 作者認為要慢慢的在有些活動場合改變讀者如何觀看我們的形象，加強改變圖書館員的消極形象，並且行銷自己有什麼技能，鼓勵人們相信我們的技術，並同時保留我們的傳統技能。
2. 我自豪地告訴自己是圖書館員，希望你也是。(I worked hard for my degree, and am proud to call myself a librarian. I hope the rest of you are, too.) (註3)
